The industry in Kuwait depends largely on oil production. It is considered as the backbone of the economic and social development in Kuwait. It meets the necessary demands of the population for commodities and services. The government is playing an important role in encouraging the expansion of industry by giving loans, providing necessary infrastructure facilities, and by protecting the newsy established industries.
A subsidized electricity supply helped to keep manufacturing overheads low. Areas of production included the manufacture of bricks for building, cement, aluminum windows and doors and also foodstuff. Obviously many of these areas were destroyed or seriously damaged during the occupation, but they have been rebuilt.
The industrial centres are in Shuwaikh, Shuaiba and Sabhan. The last two have ports and the latter is located close to the airport.
The Industrial Bank of Kuwait played a considerable part in the industrial development of the country and is doing much to assist in regaining the pre-occupation level of manufacturing and industry.
